Su Restaurante D’Pepe: Comida Casera
Jul 26th, 2008 | By Solomon | Category: Mexican, You Gotta Try This!Every Saturday afternoon for a while I have gone to “Pepe’s” when I get the chance. I go a couple of times for lunch during the week as well, because they have a constantly changing menu and great help, but the only day I try not to miss is Saturday. On Saturdays, “Pepe’s” has enchiladas with mole poblana or salsa verde(Green Sauce), both are excellent. They also serve a pancita dish, which is stomach of some type so I don’t really go for that. Lately, I have been going for the Red Pozole, a soup made of maiz(hominy corn) and pork in a slightly spicy red broth. It is excellent, I start craving the pozole on thursday.
When you order at Pepe’s they include with your meal a pitcher of Agua Fresca, today was Horchata, which is a sweetened rice beverage, but depending on the day they serve different flavors. If you order a meal that is not soup based, they bring you a bowl of chicken soup to start your meal, I thought this was odd at first because of the hot temperature outside, but after trying it I have become very accustomed to soup apetizer.
Pozole is served with a plate of condiments: lettuce, radish, habenero pepper, onion, and lime, is up to the consumer how the Pozole is doctored, but I prefer mine with a little bit of everything. Today I was brought powdered oregano and a dark brown powder that I was informed was very spicy, but nobody knew the name. I was taught to crunch handfuls of tortilla chips over the top of the soup while I eat it, but a little at a time so that the bowl does not overflow, as it is always served very full.
A warning about Pozole, most places I have tried it offer two choices when you order the Pozole, they ask “Surtida o maciza?” which translates to “Do you want only shredded pork or would you prefer the soup with all the bits?” I was adventurous a while back and ordered it “Surtida” and was actually pretty pleased with the outcome, it does come with bits of skin and stomach, but not enough to make the flavor unpleasant. I now order it this way always, but some people are turned off by the pieces of stuff, so “Maciza” is often a good choice for the beginner.
Pepe’s offers a wonderful meal for a good price, every dish at thisestablishment is just $45 pesos, with the drink included. They offer a breakfast menu until 11:30, everything there is priced very reasonably. Su Restaurante D’Pepe is located on Avenida Luis Donaldo Colosio between 15th and 20th avenue, I would recommend it to anyone looking for good traditional food at a reasonable price.
