I grew up in North Carolina and am a veteran Southern/Soul Food eater. Biscuits were a staple carb in our house, and I learned to make cheese grits and red velvet cake before I left home. I have always liked food and I have always liked to eat. In fact, I have been eating all of my life.
A few years of life in the north eastern US gave me a new love for Italian and Latin American food. There were many wonderful things I hadn’t tasted before that gave me a better understanding of the meaning of life, such as zeppoles. Of course, a girl can’t live on fried dough alone, so I also learned to love Papas Rellenas, chicken empanadas, pollo asado with moros y cristianos and maduros.
Since moving to Playa del Carmen I have discovered that what I thought was Mexican food was actually TexMex. I enjoy learning more about true Mexican food and experiencing Mexican twists on old favorites (sushi with jalapenos?).
